Japanese Candles (Wa-rosoku)

¥3,300

Japanese candles (Wa-rosoku) are born from the nature of Japan and the ingenuity of its ancestors. These particular candles are used at "Enrian" in Sagano, Kyoto—the site of the Ogura Sanso villa where Fujiwara no Teika compiled the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu. This connection marked the beginning of our relationship with candle maker Mr. Aoyagi.

While Japanese candles were once lit everywhere in daily life—from Buddhist altars to vaudeville theaters and tea rooms—only a dozen or so workshops across the country continue this hand-crafted tradition today. As one of these few artisans, Aoyagi carries forward the tradition of plant-based candles, characterized by a powerful yet flickering flame.

This set of three allows you to freely choose the color of both the box and the candles. For this huko original edition, we offer special monochromatic combinations of white-on-white and black-on-black.
