Kiyomizu-dera

¥4,400

"FEEL KIYOMIZUDERA" is an ongoing project that captures the ever-changing "now" of the 1,250-year-old Otowasan Kiyomizu-dera Temple through photography and film. It continues to explore the form of modern prayer and the role of a temple in the contemporary world.

This photo book, born from the project, is centered on the concept: "Cherish the instant; live in the now." While the temple’s halls and pagodas may appear immutable, they breathe alongside the mountains—which shift their expression from morning to evening—and undergo constant, moment-to-moment transformation.

The volume features a carefully curated selection of scenes from a vast four-year archive. The pages unfold with a profound stillness, reminiscent of the spatial composition of the 2016 photography exhibition held at the temple’s Kyodo (Sutra Hall). This record of "landscapes of prayer," seen from within the temple and through the compassionate heart of Kannon Bosatsu (Avalokitesvara), offers deep INSIGHT to help us re-examine our own present moment.

Otowasan Kiyomizu-dera (おとわさん きよみずでら)

Since 2012, Kiyomizu-dera has been dedicated to the project "FEEL KIYOMIZUDERA," meticulously recording not only special rituals and events but also the daily lives of monks and the shifting seasonal scenery. The project aims to preserve intangible cultural heritage alongside physical icons like Buddhist statues and temple halls.

As a "living, breathing" temple, Kiyomizu-dera shares the spirit of "prayer" by overlaying the moments of selfless devotion with the landscape of faith. While seeking the ideal form of a Buddhist temple for 100 or 1,000 years into the future, it continues to communicate the essence of prayer to the world today.
